My RV Roof A/C Smells Musty

by Pete

Question: When my roof a/c comes on each time for a brief few moments it smells musty. What could be the problem?

Robbie: You have a tray in the AC that collects water and it should run out on the roof and down the side of your RV when it's being used. Sometimes a small amount of water remains in the tray and over time can develop the odor your experiencing.

Also the fins inside could need to be cleaned. The fins get wet when the AC runs and like the inside of a frig can get a bad odor. You can have the fins cleaned and sanitized and the tray on the top checked and the drains cleared. But I got to tell you it's hard to clear out the odor once it starts.

Good luck,

Robbie Warford, San Diego RV Repair

Hi, I'm Robbie. Welcome to!

Like the name implies, this site is all about helping you save money while keeping your RV in tip-top shape--and that is all about you having the knowledge to do so.

I've been a technician in the RV industry for 30 years, operating out of San Diego, California. And let me tell you, I love my job.

But I also love empowering RVers with the knowledge they need to make the right decision on repairs, or to make the fix themselves--and that, my friend, is the reason for this website. I hope you enjoy.
