How To Check Out If RV Solar Operation Working or Not?

by Duane Dalton
(Denver,Colorado USA)

Question: I have had a solar panel on my RV for several years and everything was great then this spring we went to use the 5th wheel and the battery was dead one cell was bad so I bought a new deep cycle battery. Now the solar panel don't seem to be working. At the battery there is only 12.2 volts. Is this normal? If not how do I check it out? The small yellow box has two lights on it one green and one yellow. The yellow one is on when the new battery in installed.

Robbie: OK, remove the wiring at the batteries coming from the solar and take a reading. It should be reading over 13. If you have a small solar system the voltage reading at the batteries might take a while to come up. Does it say on the yellow box what the lights indicate? If not, you can give me the make and model and I'll look it up for you. Also tell me how many panels you have and how many batteries you're charging and I can tell you how to test their output. I will wait to hear from you.

Good Luck,
Robbie
