A/C Compressor Does Not Always Come On When Tstat Calls For Cool

by Jon
(Magnolia, TX)

Question:My center unit, 13,500 BTU AirXcel/Coleman unit will come on when thermostat calls for cool, and fan comes on immediately. The compressor does not come on at that time, and seems to be trying. After a few tries the other day, the compressor did come on and stay. Do I have a bad start or run capacitor that I should check?

Robbie: Yes it could be the start or run capacitor or it could be the time delay to the compressor or the pressure switch on the compressor. It could also be the thermostat sending a intermittent signal. Unless your familiar with the system I suggest you have a tech look at your AC because the voltages are very high at the capacitors even when the voltage is shut off and dangerous. Please be careful.

Thanks for the Question Good Luck,
Robbie

Erratic AC
by: Grannie

My issue is similar. When thermostat is on cool, the coach "grunts" at 15 or 30 second intervals, and the compressor sounds like it is trying to start. Sometimes it does. A new issue added, The thermostat ticks when turned to on or auto. Ideas?

Compressor works half the time.
by: Anonymous

I've been trying to get my problem diagnosed. When connected to shore power, many times my compressor will stop working after the A/C has been running for several minutes or even hours. I can always get the A/C unit restarted after I disconnect power cord to the unit, after I've opened up the ceiling assembly to the A/C. I never have this problem whenever the RV is running under generator power. No one seems to be able to diagnose this issue. Everyone says my compressor is bad & replace the entire unit. But if the compressor is bad, then why does the A/C run like a champ everytime its running on generator power all night long?
